I have Vanguard and J P Morgan self-directed accounts. The difference between them is that J P Morgan customer service representatives are more knowledgeable and are very helpful when service is needed. The secure message service is extremely helpful when communicating sensitive information with the brokerage. J P Morgan also offers transfer on death for joint accounts, which is important to my wife and me. The ability to transfer funds between Chase accounts and the J P Morgan brokerage account instantly is another plus. I’ve never had a major problem with Vanguard; however, I find the new website a bit clunky. It is more glitzy than functional. Vanguard’s customer support leaves a lot to be desired. With the advent of ETFs, there is absolutely no reason to deal with a brokerage with poor customer service and a poorly designed website.
