I think it’s good for children to be responsible for paying their own bills for college, whether it’s from a 529 , or other funds. My children began paying their own expenses once they started college. We set up a detailed budget covering every possible expense, except healthcare, which we covered. My ex-husband and I deposited 75% of the budget into their checking accounts each month, and they supplied the remainder by working part-time during school and full time during vacations.They were responsible for writing the checks for their tuition, room and board, car expenses, entertainment, clothing, etc. One daughter spent it all, while the more frugal daughter graduated with several thousand in her Roth IRA.
