Something to point out was that unless I misunderstood it someone in the video mentioned that it only took three hours from the fall until he was in the emergency room at the hospital which is amazing and it sounds like that is a large part of why he is doing so well.
They were able to call 911 using cell phones which was lucky especially in the west where cell phone coverage can be spotty. It sounded like they also had some sort of satellite emergency communicator which they did not have to use.
My backpacking days are long behind me but for people going into remote areas I would encourage you to look into what is currently available for emergency satellite communication. They are relatively affordable now and could be a good gift if someone you know does things like backpacking.
Even with those it would be good to not be overconfident since even if you can get a message through help could be a long ways away.
