1) You can't just add up the rent cost and compare to cost of ownership of the big SUV. OP is discussing swapping current mid-sized SUV for something larger. So the ownership delta is (large-mid sized) SUV. Yes, buying new is more costly (generally) than keeping something a bit older in service, but new vehicles, in general, have other advantages, including warranty, projected longevity, etc. I doubt the incremental cost (new vs. used aside) for a bigger SUV is all that great, especially in comparison to the amount of usage projected (which actually seems like a lot to me.)
2) OP should really look at minivans. Yes, you can get AWD in a minivan. Not sure about the legroom issue, but I think in general minivans have more interior space than even most large SUVs, so OP should at least look at it.
3) A third factor is mileage/economy, both for the long trips and for the residual, around-town usage. Some (not all) minivans get pretty great mileage. Not sure about large SUVs.
