You are correct! The 80/20 was in my head and I didn't think to put it onto my response. And yes, Medicare covers some things at 100% as you mentioned.
This is incorrect. With Plan G-HD, once you pay the Part B $240 deductible, then Medicare pays 80% of Part B expenses, as Plan G-HD is a Supplement to Medicare. From everything I've read about G vs G-HD they are run the same but that is in most of the country. Once you pay your yearly deductible ($240 for 2024) then for G_HD your medical bills come out of your pocket until you hit the MOOP. The medical bills are based on the Medicare approved amount not whatever the medical entity decides it wants to charge.
After the $240 Part B deductible, you do not pay 100% until you reach the Plan G-HD maximum out-of-pocket, you pay 20%.
It’s hard to have a large Part B bill with the low Medicare-approved rates. For example, doctor office visit bill about $250, the Medicare-approved rate is about $125, I pay 20% or about $25.
Medicare fully covers some expenses: bloodwork 100%, vaccinations 100%, colonoscopies 100%.
You’re probably not getting near the $2,870 maximum out-of-pocket without a hospitalization ($1,676 Part A deductible) or some really large Part B expenses (think chemotherapy).
I usually end up spending the $240 Part B deductible (the same as with Plan G or N) plus about $100 (20% of about $500 in Medicare-approved expenses) and save about $1,500 vs Plan G.
