Non-military here.
Good friend of mine (retired gov't Director)) gave me this response when we were talking about early retirement and taking into account money, family, and personal time.
In the end if you are contemplating on early retiring from the government/military but then want to work civilian, your time is still controlled by someone else; that's a decision point and you have to decide which option (stay or go) offers the greatest benefits and why?
Whilst playing a round of golf the other day and ten years post his early retirement, (did not continue working) he told me how fast those ten years have flown by and how important the time factor played out for him. Something else he said really struck home; you don't get those ten years back and the next ten years aren't going to be slower or guaranteed.
