I thought about mentioning that explicitly, but chose not to because the context was "received and installed", which sounded much less likely to be a serialized item. If we were talking about airpods, there would be no reason not to just throw them back in the box, return them, and order new ones. Some items (like AirPods and iPads) may have serial numbers recorded, I would not attempt this with those kinds of items. Just return the opened/used item - I don't feel bad about this as Amazon should incur a cost for their customer-unfriendly policy; they're the only major retailer I now of that doesn't do price adjustments within the return period.
Amazon doesn't price match, but you could order another one, and request a return of the first order. Then actually return the unopened item from the second order.
