Personal Consumer Issues • Supermarket pizza - any good ones? Any great ones?

Supermarket pizza is not that much cheaper than pizza from most people's local pizzeria that delivers hot, and the pizzeria probably cooks it fresh in a dedicated pizza oven at close to 800 F.
Unless your only local option is something like Domino's, your local pizzeria's pizza will probably taste far superior. And you won't have to clean a pan. Plus you support your local economy and your tips may wind up going to your neighbor's kid.
So why buy supermarket pizza?
Incidentally, last time I caught up on this thread, I got a craving for a really good pizza and stopped by the local pizzeria on my way home from work.

It depends whether the goal is just to get something on the table cheaply and easily, or if the goal is to enjoy a pizza.

We usually pay $5-6 per frozen pizza on sale, and if we keep one in the freezer, we can decide 20 minutes before dinner time we're having a pizza, and not leave the house.

The local pizzeria is definitely way better, but it's $21 before tip for a similar size. Although it is nearby, it still takes about 15 minutes to drive there, pick it up, and come home. It is less work to cook a frozen pizza and wash the pan.

The same applies to a lot of other foods. I can make fish tacos from frozen fish and a few other cheap ingredients with relatively little fuss at home (much healthier than the pizza, too, but a bit more work). For special occasions, though, I'll pay 4 times as much (3x on Tuesdays) to drive to a local upscale takeout place that has phenomenal fish tacos.

Actually, for that one, no I won't anymore. All of us in the neighborhood supported that business too much. The owner retired and closed the restaurant. I don't know why he didn't sell it, but if we'd been more careful to keep him poor, we could still have those delicious fish tacos. Image may be NSFW.

I agree. It is a convenience item when you want something to eat without waiting or planning. Also, every frozen pizza I make I put directly on the oven rack (as most directions say) so there is no pan to clean. The exception is the Motor City which comes with its own pan.

Though there are definitely some local pizzas places with great pizza there are some that are mediocre. Most places here really stick it to you on extra topping ramping up the price. A large 3 topping thin crust pizza with delivery and tax and tip where I live is over $40. This is not a bougie place but probably the most popular local pizza chain in Chicago. Granted, a large pizza is larger than any frozen pizza.

Sometimes I doctor a frozen pizza with some grated real Italian cheese (Pecorino or Parmigiana). Sometimes I will add chopped leftovers (like chicken) or giardiniera or sliced fresh or pickled jalapenos.
