I agree that the 2 stage is worth it, it has been a while but there might have also been a variable speed option.

You are in North Carolina and I am in Georgia where humidity is a big issue. An advantage of being able to run your AC at a low setting is that it will run a lot longer and take a lot more humidity out of the air. We will run our AC sometimes just to lower the humidity even when it is not that hot.

The thermostat which came with my system about 13 years ago has a humidistat built into it and it will take the humidity into consideration when deciding what mode to run the AC in.

In the winter time being able to run the furnace on a low setting helps prevent temperature swings and drafts.

Be sure to get quotes from multiple companies since I have had them vary a lot.

I do not understand the details but in 2025 the legal coolant for ACs is going to change again so be sure to research that.
