Personal Consumer Issues • Advice on Window Replacement

1) One of the neighbors changed their windows last year with Vinyl and that is company I got the quote from ($49k). HOA allows both vinyl and wood.

2) Only 3 windows were mentioned as being damaged. But was told they would look different from the ones that were not replaced. The glass would look different color because now they come with some UV coating or something. That would make the house look ugly and it seemed the only option to be consistent is to replace all the windows. Also the vinyl windows seem to only come in white, whereas the windows I now have are painted in a cream color.

3) I am putting pictures of two of the damaged windows below and how they look.

Window 1

The above where I marked #1 has wood that is dented in a slight curve as you can see from what I drew. So the wood is not flat or sloped outward, but like a U shape but very gentle slope. Any rain water has no way of going anywhere but stay in that dent.

I am not sure if that piece of wood is the window frame or trim. Or even if replacing the window would really replace that part. Because to me it seems that is the part that needs most in need of repair. Can anyone confirm what this part is called?

Window 2

The window above has similar damage in the area marked #3. The inside of the window has paint peeled but wood seems solid. It is pretty hard and does not come off even if I hit it hard with my hand. Again not sure if replacing window would replace the piece marked #3. This see

4) I do not have any leaks, mold, draft. On one of the windows I see condensation on the outside (I think), it is definitely not inside, and I dont think it is double paned. The area where it is rotted is marked above as #1 in Window 1 and #3 in Window 2. That is the area that would would break off if I hit it with a screwdriver. All the windows except one window operate.

Thanks for the wonderful advice. Please keep it coming!

When I had a leak, the first handyman scared the living daylights out of me. Bogleheads advice was pretty spot on and the next handyman who was referred to me by a neighbor pretty much gave the same advice as Bogleheads and it was fixed without much trouble.

Thank you!
