OP: I own FZROX, and I used to own VTI (and before that, VTSAX). VTI's ER is not zero, but it is ultra-low. FZROX has a zero ER, but it is missing 29% of the stocks that VTI owns, because it only "samples" the total stock market. Whether or not the omission of more than 1000 stocks matters is apparently unknown, but I have some concerns. So far no one has cited any articles with evidence and analysis on the question.
