Personal Investments • Creating Three-fund Portfolio at TIAA

That's the three fund portfolio (using the Extended Market Fund to couple with the S&P 500 to approximate the Total US), so hard to call your options limited. 8-)
You're right. I guess I meant more that I don't have the common options from the wiki. (VTSAX, VTIAX, VFIAX, etc.)
VIIIX, VEMPX, VTPSX, etc. are only referenced here in the forum as far as I can tell.
No worries. Just pointing out that you are not alone.

It's very, very common for 401k, 403b, and 457b plans to offer the CITs lower cost Institutional Vanguard Funds (less expense ER fees) that are typically the S&P 500 (called Vanguard Institutional Index Fund) plus either the Extended Market fund to use as a completion fund, or a Small Cap and Mid Cap fund that one can use as the completion fund(s) to approximate the Total US Stock Market Fund (VTSAX or VTI as it is known). That's why the Wiki here has the page on how to approximate the Total US Stock Market Fund located here:

Examples of our 401k, 403b, and 457b plans (including TIAA)...

Vanguard Extended Market Index Fund Admiral 15% (ER .09)
Vanguard Total International Stock Index Fund Admiral 15% (ER .12)
Vanguard Total Bond Market Index Fund Admiral 30% (ER .06)

Spouse #1 Traditional 401k

Vanguard 500 Index Fund Admiral 39% (ER .05)
Vanguard Extended Market Index Fund Admiral 10% (ER .09)
Vanguard Total International Stock Index Fund Admiral 11% (ER .12)
Vanguard Total Bond Market Index Fund Admiral 40% (ER .06)

Spouse #1 Roth 401k

Vanguard Extended Market Index Fund Admiral 10% (ER .09)
Vanguard Total International Stock Index Fund Admiral 11% (ER .12)
Vanguard Total Bond Market Index Fund Admiral 40% (ER .06)

Spouse #2 403b (Voluntary Plan) Plan includes an administrative ER fee of .14 added to each fund as listed here...

Vanguard Institutional Index Fund 32% (ER .18 - includes administrative fee)
Vanguard Mid Cap Index Institutional 2% (ER .22 - includes administrative fee)
Vanguard Sm Cap Index Institutional 6% (ER .22 - includes administrative fee)
Vanguard Developed Markets Index Fund Institutional 20% (ER .23 - includes administrative fee)
Vanguard Interim Term Bond Index Fund Admiral 40% (ER .25 - includes administrative fee)

Spouse #2 457b (Voluntary Plan) Plan includes an administrative ER fee of .14 added to each fund as listed here...

Vanguard Institutional Index Fund 24% (ER .18 - includes administrative fee)
Vanguard Mid Cap Index Institutional 2% (ER .22 - includes administrative fee)
Vanguard Sm Cap Index Institutional 4% (ER .22 - includes administrative fee)
Vanguard Developed Markets Index Fund Institutional 30% (ER .23 - includes administrative fee)
DFA Real Estate Securities Institutional 10% (ER .36 - includes administrative fee)
Vanguard Interim Term Bond Index Fund Admiral 30% (ER .25 - includes administrative fee)

The good news is that you have the low cost Vanguard CITs available within your TIAA 403b to have the three fund portfolio!

You are miles ahead of most of my colleagues where I taught. Whenever I would mention an ER fee to them, I got nothing but blank stares. So keep on, keeping on while you load up on the three funder over the coming decades. :beer
