Personal Investments • Conversion from mutual funds to ETFs: details?

I did this recently. It was a bear to figure out […] We had held 3 Janus MFs for several decades. We decided to move them to Etrade since we were already familiar with the platform and wanted to switch to a SP500 ETF. It is a direct transfer or rollover (forget the exact term) so no taxes.
I understood the OP's situation as converting Vanguard MFs to their equivalent ETFs, in a taxable account (not IRA) at Vanguard. This is a completely different situation from yours, arising from Vanguard's special MF/ETF structure in which (for example) the MF VTSAX and the ETF VTI are two different share classes of the same underlying fund. Even if this takes place in a taxable account, it incurs no tax consequences, although one should make sure the cost basis of the MFs is correctly carried over to the ETFs.
Hmm.. new here. How did you know OP was in Vanguard and in taxable account. I don't see that in their question.
