I spent time with family and my significant other, worked out, played with my German Shepherd, and spent a lot of time teaching myself finance, accounting, and equity valuation for 2 1/2 years. An investor that I knew only through email chat invited me to apply for an equity analyst position, and I did that for several years, earned the CFA designation and an MBA, then moved to my hometown to be near family.

A few years later I became deathly ill, was misdiagnosed by a physician, took control of my own workup, made the diagnosis, and recovered. That spurred me to return to medicine where I remain more than 10 years on. At this point, I no longer take call, and that makes all the difference.
