Zipcoding is when a vendor/contractor will look up your zipcode to see what other locations/towns/cities you are adjacent to, using the zipcode to look up demographics, economic activity, income levels, census data, the condition of the houses in the neighborhood. In my particular town, it was once a dyed in the wool blue collar area but has since transitioned into a higher than average income area and is located adjacent to wealthy towns. Some unscrupulous contractors will automatically assign a higher estimate to the services they provide because they believe you have bigger pockets.+1I do my own landscaping (and it shows Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.), I will do minor home improvement. I seal my own driveway simply because I can’t find honest contractors. I don’t touch electrical beyond swapping out new sockets or fixtures. Nor will I go up on the roof. I will change out my car battery, change filters but won’t tackle more complicated issues because I don’t have a lift and don’t want to start getting involved with ramps and such (plus I lack the space). I will maintain my snow blower and lawn equipment.
I realize people need to make a living but some of these prices are ridiculous (yet people will pay them). Hence I selectively choose what I’m willing to pay for ($3k a season for a lawn of a 1/10 of an acre is not reasonable).
Maybe my cost consciousness stems from my upbringing when funds were nonexistent but I want value for my hard earned income. Zipcoding is a real phenomenon in my town and I’m mindful of it.
