Personal Finance (Not Investing) • How to sell a car?

Make sure your bill of sale signed by the buyer states the car is sold as is with no warranty express or implied.
You want to first find out how your state (and the buyer's state if he's not in your state) handles this. In my state, that would make the car un-registerable and designate it a "for parts only" sale. A car of his years and miles do carry a warranty.

I have sold cars of this amount giving the buyer the choice of meeting at his bank where he will get a cashiers check in front of you after which you will cash that into a new bank issued cashiers check to you. I go a step further and ask for them to issue that check at no cost. If they say no (which they always do), I say, that's ok, I'll take it in cash. They then issue the free cashiers check. What this does is disconnects the check from the buyer. Cashiers checks CAN be stopped.

My second option has been envelopes of hundreds and twentys.

If you don't want the bother or hassle or risk, just bring the car to Car Max and walk with a check.
