Thanks. If anything, this thread has confirmed I’ll rent first before buying anything. The thought of buying was I keep hearing (and seeing on Redfin) of price decreases. As all the points in this thread call out, there are good reasons for buyer caution!Howdy,
Live in Florida (small town, used to be LCOL) and have driven around here and there. I've spent time in most FL cities.
I just wanted to chime in and say, like others, be very careful of flood maps and the building you choose. Research the history of the building you choose and the hurricane fortifications. Don't go by price and accommodations. It's not a matter of if but when. Parts of my area flooded, and parts got off scot free from Ian, Milton and Helene.
Also be aware of the insurance crisis but coming from CA I'm assuming you're used to it.
May I ask your motivation from CA? More tropical less desert vibes, lower COL with palm trees?
Why am I considering this?
There is something about the Florida vibe in that area that is infectious. The people, the beaches, the atmosphere. Could I live there year round? Unlikely. 3-6 months sure.
Being close to the carribean and Central/s America is attractive.
Being closer to Europe (where I’m from) also helps.
Friends moved there and we’ve met them there. Once our kids are thru school in a few short years, I’d like a change for at least part of the year and we can see ourselves there!
(We would not sell the CA home - at least not for another decade or so)
