Automatic braking: I have never yet triggered a true "auto brake" event in forward moving traffic yet. A few times, it has given me a warning chime with "BRAKE" flashing in the instrument cluster when the system felt I was closing in too quickly on a car that was slowing or stopped in front of me. I got a false positive once when someone was standing in front of me and trying to help direct me into a small parking space. I was inching the car forward slowly when it auto braked because I guess the system detected him as a possible pedestrian. The auto braking can definitely be startling when you aren't expecting it.I am wondering about experience with the following safety features on carsDo these feature work for you? What does it not prevent against?
- Automatic Braking - I am guessing that this is a feature where if the car notice someone in front of the car, the car will automatically brake. Is this typically in front and back. How small does the object need to be to trigger it (pet vs child vs adult) and are there false positives?
- Lane departure working - I believe you are driving on the road and you drift to a different lane. I imagine it triggers if you change lane without using the turn signal?
- Rear Cross Traffic Alert - I think I might have this on my car. When I shift to the rear, an alert is sound if a car is moving near my car?
- Blind spot monitoring - an alert occur if you attempt to turn and there is a car in your blind spot. Usually a lot is display on the side mirror.
Lane Departure Warning: Steering wheel vibrates if I cross over into the other lane or the shoulder. It's pretty subtle and not too annoying. It does trigger if you lane change without signaling. Doesn't work if roads that are snow covered since it obviously can't detect any lane markings in that setting.
Rear Cross Traffic Alert: Combined with auto brake. This did help me once when I was backing out of a parking spot with limited view of the cross traffic behind me. There was a chime and the car braked itself. Again, the braking is pretty startling when you are not expecting it. Ironically, I also got a false positive rear auto brake once when a friend was standing in the driveway helping me watch for traffic while I was backing out. I guess the system detected him as cross traffic or a pedestrian even though he was standing a few feet off to the side and (I think) standing still.
Blind Spot Monitoring: Works fine. Lights up in the side mirror. Additionally, if you put the signal on, it will also chime. Often get false positive chimes when I moving through an intersection with multiple turn lanes even though I have no intention of changing lanes. For instance, when say there are two left turn lanes and I am in the right-most left turn lane and my left turn signal is on and it detects traffic moving in the left-most left turn lane and it chimes thinking I want to change lanes even though I have no intention to change lanes and am just turning left through the intersection and intending on staying in the lane I am already in. I've just learned to expect the chime in that setting.
Lane keep assist: Not mentioned but I'll comment on it. Keeps the car centered in its lane. I like using this on long highway drives. It make pretty subtle corrections in steering to keep you centered in the lane and I find it actually makes long highway drives less fatiguing. Deactivates when turn signal is on. System doesn't work well or at all if lane markings are missing or on snow covered roads.
