Personal Consumer Issues • How to avoid getting ripped off on urgent home repairs?

At least they are timely, courteous, the work is warrantied, and they point out what they did and how it's up to code. In these types of situations, is there any way to avoid getting ripped off? I can't have the family go without hot water for 4-5 days or have a leaking CO exhaust vent, and I'm sure these companies know that when they are writing up their quotes.
It sounds like you are getting quality work you’re happy with done on very short notice / weekends. I don’t think it’s necessarily a ripoff to pay more for those things. I chalk stuff like this up to “sometimes you’re unlucky and that’s how things go” and move on.
